This publication contains the proceedings of the Mostar 2004 Workshop which was organized by the Municipality of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, jointly with IRCICA, in July 1997. UNDP and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture extended their sponsorship to the event; UNESCO and the World Monuments Fund participated in it. The workshop, inaugurated with the speech of the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina Alija Izetbegović, was one of the landmark stages of the ten-year program of architectural studies and workshops titled “Mostar 2004” conducted by IRCICA through 1994-2004. Prime Minister Dr. Haris Silajdzić, and on behalf of the World Monuments Fund, the former US Secretary of State Mr. Cyrus Vance, gave keynote addresses. Leading international experts taught in the program. Students of architectural conservation from various countries participated in it. As a result of the studios and field works conducted daily from 2-30 July 1997, plans were produced and guidelines were formulated for restoration and conservation projects in and around Mostar. These publications constitute a body of highly specialized references in the field of restoration and conservation and about the sites and monuments of Mostar and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The activities also helped to raise awareness in world opinion about the cultural and urban heritage of Mostar and the whole country. The book presents the reports, plans and guidelines that resulted from the workshop, grouped under the themes covered and the titles of the projects implemented: “Mostar 2004 Workshop Overview” by Prof. Judith Bing; “Mostar: Future of Historic Area” by Dr. Amir Pašić, Program Coordinator, IRCICA; several articles under each of “The Neretva River Project”; “Housing”; “Restoration Projects”; and in conclusion, “The Mostar 2004 Projects Summary” by Prof. Jerrilyn Dodds, all in English.
