This two-volume work is the third publication in IRCICA’s series titled History of Ottoman Scientific Literature. It follows the same methodology. It contains entries for 1629 printed and manuscript works produced in the Muslim world during the Ottoman period, on scientific subjects relating to geography, cosmography, and cartography. The findings of this comprehensive survey indicate the advances made in both Western – and Eastern – oriented geographical sciences throughout the Ottoman period. This continued until Western geographical sciences became dominant in the 19th century following the establishment of universities with departments of geography. The main centre of geographical research was Istanbul.
