Les mashqs en thuluth et naskh de Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi

IRCICA and Sakıp Sabancı University, Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) collaborated to publish the calligraphy mashqs (worksheets) of four eminent masters of Islamic calligraphy: Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi (1801-1876) for Thuluth and Naskh (SSM, 120-0164); Hasan Rıza Efendi (1849-1920) for Thuluth-Naskh, Muhaqqaq and Riqā‘ (SSM, no. 120-0225); Mehmed Hulūsi Yazgan (1869-1940) for Ta‘līq (SSM, no. 120-0322), and Mehmed Esad Yesārī (1730-1798) for Nasta‘līq (SSM, no. 120-0061).

In the teaching traditions of Islamic calligraphy art, mashqs featuring model texts in Arabic script are prepared by the master for learners’ practice. These sets of mashqs inherited from the great masters are invaluable, both for educational purposes and as cultural heritage. Published in separate volumes with introductory texts in English, Turkish and Arabic, these four sets of mashqs are valuable additions to earlier volumes in the same series containing those of Mehmed Şevki Efendi (1829-1887) for Thuluth and Naskh (3rd ed. 2022) and Mustafa Halim Özyazıcı (1898-1964) for Diwanī, Jaly Diwanī and Riqā‘ (2003).
