Takvim-i Vekayi (The Ottoman Official Gazette)

Takvim-i Vekayi is the Official Gazette of the Ottoman State and the first Turkish newspaper published in İstanbul. IRCICA published the Takvim-i Vekayi in the form of 11 DVDs and one CD. It is a valuable source of information for researchers working on the history of the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th. The gazette was issued between the years 1831-1922, with intervals, over three periods: 1 November 1831– 8-9 April 1880, 2139 numbers; 26 March 1891-14 May 1892, 283 numbers; 28 September 1908 – 4 November 1922, 4608 numbers. Thus, IRCICA’s recordings contain 7030 numbers in total. The gazette not only announced the decrees of the State, but was also a medium of information on actual facts and events. It gave news on military defense affairs, domestic developments, foreign affairs, the orders and decrees of the Sultan, laws and regulations; budgetary and financial affairs; graduations, medals; economy and public health; scientific, commercial and industrial developments; odd or strange events; public notices. It was published in Turkish and sometimes also in the following languages, although irregularly for short periods: Arabic, Persian, Greek, Armenian and French. Takvim-i Vekayi is a valuable source on the later periods of Ottoman history.
